The Surry and Stokes County Gang Grant Initiative is supported with funds from the

North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention

COMMUNITY INDICATORS/NEEDS

The District 17-B Gang Assessment will collect the following Community Indicators to help identify needs and local perceptions within Surry and Stokes Counties:

Community Demographic Data: General community descriptive and demographic data to provide a context for the assessment as a whole.

(Examples: Census and Other Community Indicator Data such as Agency, Hospital, Governmental)

Law Enforcement Data: The nature and extent of gang crime and characteristics of local gangs.

(Examples: Gang activity, number, demographics, incident reports by crime, location, date, age, race gender and descriptive information)

School Data: Descriptive data on the climate of local schools, characteristics of school students who are involved in and/or at risk of involvement in gangs, and perceptions of school staff members.

(Examples: Student characteristics and disciplinary actions; youth and teacher perceptions of gangs and activities)

Community Perceptions Data: Data that describes how key segments of the community are experiencing the gang problem, including community members, parents, community leaders, youth, and gang members themselves.

(Examples: Student characteristics and disciplinary actions; youth and teacher perceptions of gangs and activities)

Community Resources Data: Current and historical responses to the gang problem, including gaps in and barriers to services.

(Examples: Past community response to gangs, current service delivery, current LEO Strategies, correctional risk assessment delivery of gangs)
